DAMIANA, A HISTORICAL LOOK AT NATURE'S APHRODISIAC. 

Many people have wondered if there was any type of herbal alternative.  Hence we are brought to the subject of "Damiana".  Damiana is a shrub that grows in South America, Mexico and the desert southwest of the United States.  While there is no scientific study that we are aware of that currently confirms that Damiana enhances sexual performance, Damiana, in its historical uses was that of a sex stimulator or increasing sex drive or aphrodisiac, hence the Latin name "Turnera aphrodisiaca". Ancient Mexican Indian cultures used Damiana as an aphrodisiac.  Other reports allege that Damiana was used historically for frigidity in women and impotence in men.  The action of this herb is reported to increase the output of the male hormone testosterone.  Interestingly, historical uses of Damiana also included women who were suffering from hormone-related deficiencies such as menopause and hot flashes. 

Damiana is not the only herb with traditional uses in sex drive.  Historical uses of Nature's Sunshine "X-Action for Men" or "X-Action for Women" have historical uses in increasing sex drive as does "X-A" for Women", and lastly "Cordycepts" should be mentioned here in the same capacity.  Of the several components in some of these formulas, again Damiana's presence is apparent.  Damiana is sold in an encapsulated form either as a single herb or in conjunction with herbal combinations.
